Beach Handball

beachBeach handball or you can also call it the Sand ball is a kind of handball which played on the beach or on the sand not on the indoor court. This is also a team sport same as the handball in which two teams fight to throw the ball in the goal post of the opponent team. Matches in the beach handball are played in 2 or 3 sets. The third set will come into existence when both teams won a set each. In this the scoring includes if goalkeeper scores a goal of its own then it is considered as 2 points, while the goal of the field player is considered as 1 point. Some people merged it with volleyball but this is different from the volleyball. Brazil is the current number 1 country in the world.

The rules and regulations are different from handball. The court dimension of the beach handball is 27x12m. This court is in rectangular shape which consists of two goal areas and a playing area. The surface of the court is composed of leveled sand. The surface is designed to be flat. It will not have to be consisting of shells, rocks or anything that will hurt the player. The sand will be 40 cm deep. The playing area will be of 15×12 m. Goal width is 2 meters in height and 3 meters in width. The sides are chosen by the team winning the toss. After the half time the ends of the team have to be changed.

There are two halves in each game. The 10 minutes of games are played in every half. The half time is of 5 minutes. Each team can take a time out of 1 minute if they want. The ball possession also includes a free throw, a goal keeper throw, a six-meter throw or a throw in. The playing ball is made up of non-slippery rubber. It is in round shape with a weight of 350 to 370 grams and a circumference of 54 to 56 cm. The ball used by the women’s weighs 280 to 300 grams and 50 to 52 cm’s in circumference.

The punishments are also included in the game. The player can be suspended by the referee when he found that he is offending any player. The suspension period of the player will last after the possession of the ball changes. If any player is suspended for the second time then he is disqualified from the game. The fouls are punished more strictly in beach handball, than in the indoor handball. If any player will get a red card, then he will be suspended for the next match. The tournaments of beach handball are also organised by IHF.

Women’s Handball World Championship

Untitled-1IHF is the organizer of the Women’s Handball World Championship since 1949. In their first event only four teams are participating. This number is started increasing from 4 to 24 in 1997. B tournament is introduced in 1977 and a C tournament is introduced in 1986. These tournaments are the qualification tournaments for playing in the main event. These B and C tournaments are replaced by the present qualification tournament in the year 1993. From the introduction of a new qualification system in 1993, these tournaments are organized every other year. The B and C tournament are held after every four years. These are organized with the alternating years with the Olympic tournament. Women’s handball is first time introduced in the 1976 Olympics. Before the introduction of women’s handball in the Olympics these tournaments are organized more irregularly. The first 5 tournaments were organized in the summers and the remaining tournaments are organized in the months of November and December.

The 22nd women’s handball world championship will be held in Denmark in 2015. The declaration of Denmark as a host country is declared on 27th January 2011. Venues for the matches of the tournaments are announced on 7th June 2014. The final will be hosted on the Jyske Bank Boxen ground in Herning. This ground will also host the round matches of the 16 and 2 quarterfinals and both semifinals. All matches of Denmark group are also hosted by this ground. The Kolding’s Tre-For Arena will host the Germany’s group matches if they will be able to qualify for this, two of the quarterfinals and the eighth finals. While Frederikshavan’s, Arena Nord and a new venue in the city of Naestved will host the matches the matches of one group each and one Eighth final. The teams of Denmark, Brazil, Dr Congo, Angola and Tunisia have already qualified for the tournament, Denmark is qualified because of the host nation and Brazil is qualified because they are the current world champions. Angola, Tunisia and Congo are qualified from the African Women’s Handball Championship held in 2014. The remaining 19 teams will qualify from the different qualification tournaments still to be held.

Rules of Handball

rulesIt is very simple to play handball because handball rules and regulations are very simple and they are ensured that the game will flow freely. Here I am going to explain you some of the basic handball rules, by which you can get familiar with this very fast playing game.

Rule of the Six Metre Line

Only the goalkeeper is allowed inside the 6m line which is the goal area of the defender team, no other player is allowed to enter into this area. The exception to this rule is that the attacking player can jump into that area after he makes a shot on the goal, and he has to leave the ball before touching inside the goal area.

Walking

Any player is not allowed to take more than 3 steps without dribbling the ball. You cannot hold the ball for more than three seconds. You have to bounce it, pass it or shoot it. If the referee finds that you are holding the ball and refer it as a foul, then he will refer it as walking and your possession from the ball will be lost.

Double Dribble

You are not allowed to catch the ball after bouncing it and again bouncing it and catching it. This is against the rules of the games and called as Double Dribble. You are also not allowed to kick the ball. Only goalkeeper can kick the ball. If anyhow the ball touches your foot then you will lose your possession and possession will be given to the opposition. Fouls were declared at the time when any player is found guilty of hitting, tripping, clinching, pushing, holding or charging.

Handball penalty Throws

Penalty throws are awarded when you will try to stop your opponent from scoring goal with any kind of infringement. Cards are also shown in this. Yellow card stands for a warning to the player, Red card refers as a dismissal of a player from the game and suspension stands for sending you out of the ground for 2 minutes. Throw-ins are awarded in the handball when the ball crosses the sideline of the court. It is awarded to the player of the opposite side who touched it last. In this player have to put their one foot on the sideline of the court and then will have to throw the ball into the court. Corners are awarded in handball when the defender throws the ball over the goal line. The attacking player has to put 1 foot on the corner of the goal line and the side line and have to pass the ball inside the court. The goalkeeper has to take their Goal throws from their own goal area.

History of handball

These seven players consist of six outfield players who played on the court and a goalkeeper. They pass the ball between them to reach the goal post of the opposite team. This game is played in the time limit of 60 minutes, with two periods of 30 minutes. The team who scored more goals wins the game.

The dimensions of the modern handball courts are 40×20 meters. The goal post is at the center of each end. The goal post is surrounded by the zone of six-meter. Only the goalkeeper is allowed on the defending side is allowed there. If the players are able to put the ball into the goal post on the other side than it will consist as a goal. Handball is specially an indoor game but it is played in other forms also like beach handball or field handball. This is a very fast game where the defenders try to stop attackers from reaching their goal post.

The origin of handball goes back to the 19th century. This game is firstly played in northern Europe, mainly in Germany and Scandinavia. The rules which are used in modern games are set by Germany in the year of 1917, and since then there are many changes evolved in the rules. These rules are applied in the first international tournament held for the Handball for both men and women. The first Men’s tournament is hosted in 1925 and for women in 1930. In 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin men’s handball are added as an outdoor game. And in 1972 Munich Summer Olympics it is added as an indoor game. Since then it is considered as an indoor game. Women’s handball team is included in the Summer Olympics of 1976.

IHF (International Handball Federation) was formed in the year of 1946 and 174 are the member of federation till 2013. Handball is most popular in the European continent. You can understand their domination by the fact that the European countries won each and every medal in men’s world cup title since 1938 and women’s are also equally dominant as men’s, they also won all the titles since 2013. In 2013 Brazil becomes the first Non-European country to win the handball world cup. Handball is now also gaining popularity in Brazil, Far East and North Africa. Their teams are also performing well in various tournaments.
